SUMMARY
Through a scenario-based approach, learners navigate real-world challenges by making decisions and taking action that align with library policies.
Conversations with library staff during the instructional analysis phase provided insight into their daily challenges, allowing me to create relatable scenarios that address these issues.
The course offers practical tools and clear, actionable strategies to help staff handle difficult interactions with professionalism and confidence while maintaining a positive and supportive environment.
-
My goal:
To design a simple yet effective course with a strong hook to engage learners, tap into their past experiences, and provide opportunities for knowledge transfer, demonstration, and application.
Training goal:
To build confidence in library staff by presenting real-life, problem-centered scenarios that teach effective communication and boundary-setting strategies, ensuring these skills can be immediately applied on the job.
-
The design and development process:
Needs Analysis: I conducted an informal analysis to identify challenges staff face in setting professional boundaries with patrons. These conversations were a key component in identifying their varying levels of knowledge and confidence about personal and professional boundaries and handling difficult interactions.
Scenario Design: I developed relatable, real-life situations that library staff are likely to encounter, ensuring relevance and authenticity.
Mentor Character: I introduced an approachable and supportive mentor who connects with learners. guides them through the course, and shares practical tips.
Interactive Elements: I included drag-and-drop exercises, role-play scenarios, and branching dialogue to actively engage learners.
Tone and Accessibility: I maintained a friendly, conversational tone to resonate with staff while using simple language to ensure accessibility.

Action Map
I built this action map in Miro. The process helped guide the design of my training solution, ensuring a focus on behavioral change rather than just knowledge acquisition. To define the key actions, behaviors, and tasks learners needed to perform, I collaborated with my subject matter expert to enhance employee performance.

Storyboard
I drafted a development-ready visual storyboard in PowerPoint with a strong emphasis on detail. It included scripted audio narration and carefully crafted feedback for decision-based slides. It outlined course content and featured basic mockups of slide layouts and elements. This served as an excellent guide during course development in Storyline.

Job Aid
I designed this job aid using Canva and PowerPoint as a convenient reference tool for library staff. It can be used as a bookmark or displayed as signage at the circulation desk, providing quick access to key language from the course. This aid supports staff in setting and enforcing boundaries with patrons effectively.
